Unsung Hero Award 2025

The Unsung Hero Award is sponsored by the East Grinstead Memorial Estate Charity which wishes to recognise annually the voluntary support given in the sporting and recreational sector and is prersented by the Mayor at his annual reception.

The award brings with it a cheque for the benefit of the volunteer’s club of £750 and a personal award of John Lewis vouchers for the recipient.

This year’s winner has been a member of the EG athletics club, as both coach, official and occasionally athlete, since joining the Club in 1992. Briefly holding the English Schools triple jump record in one competition.

He can be found coaching athletes 2 or 3 times per week throughout the year. He also assists with activities at the EG FC where he was Treasurer for many years up to 2003, to this day remains the main gateman / turnstile operator.

This year’s richly deserved Unsung Hero Award, for the dedication and time he has given to East Grinstead athletics, goes to Lester Medcalf
